RFE/RL is looking for an experienced Social Media Editor to manage and grow the social media presence of its Ukrainian Service from the Kyiv bureau. This is a full-time role for someone who understands both newsroom standards and the way audiences consume, share and discuss news on digital platforms.

You will work closely with the Chief Editor and the wider editorial team. Your job will be to make sure RFE/RL’s journalism reaches the right audiences on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and other relevant platforms — with strong editorial judgment, clear formats and a safe, respectful space for audience discussion.

About the role

As Social Media Editor, you will coordinate, edit and manage RFE/RL Ukrainian Service’s social media presence. You will identify stories with strong audience potential, adapt content for social platforms and support new digital initiatives.

This is not only a publishing role. You will also follow trends, mine the web for news leads, create social-first content, run audience engagement formats and track performance of promoted content.

What you will do

You will:

  • Manage RFE/RL Ukrainian Service’s accounts on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram
  • Explore new platforms and formats to reach new audiences
  • Publish RFE/RL content on social media and optimize it for search visibility
  • Produce content specifically for social media
  • Promote content through social media advertising, including audience targeting and performance tracking
  • Plan and create polls, quizzes and other interactive formats
  • Respond to or forward messages received through social media channels
  • Moderate discussions under posts and help maintain a tolerant, hate-speech-free environment
  • Use journalistic judgment to identify stories that are both shareable and aligned with RFE/RL standards
  • Monitor the web for news leads and support the development of news stories
  • Keep the editorial team updated throughout the day on trending topics and stories worth exploring

What we are looking for

You should have:

  • 3+ years of experience in digital journalism and social media in a news organization
  • Strong news judgment
  • Excellent writing skills in a news environment
  • Experience using social and digital media to find, adapt and distribute content
  • Broad knowledge of political, economic and social developments in the broadcast area and international affairs
  • Ability to work effectively in changing situations and with different perspectives
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage several responsibilities at the same time and work under deadlines

A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience is also relevant.

Languages

You need:

  • Native-level Ukrainian
  • Working proficiency in English
  • Knowledge of another foreign language is an advantage.

Should you be interested in this position please apply by submitting your CV and a cover letter in English.
